John Charles had called upon his Italian connections and the Leeds team had been boosted by the inclusion of Ian Rush and Michel Platini of Juventus and their compatriot Gaetona Scirea and Kenny Dalglish of Liverpool, while Bobby Collins had found sound opposition in his former club and reigning English champions, Everton. Simon Grayson replaced Peter Haddock at Right Half, Ian Baird replaced Ian Rush at Centre Forward, John Stiles replaced Michel Platini at Inside Left and Gary Speed came on for David Batty at Outside Left for Leeds. There was a crowd of over 13,000 and receipts were £25,000. There was a virtuoso performance from Ian Rush as he responded to the promptings of Platini and Dalglish to tear the Everton defence to shreds, with goals in the sixth, twenty-first and fifty-second minutes. Neil Adams managed a first equaliser in the eighth minute and Adrian Heath scored a consolation goal in the sixty-first minute. But it was a good night for legendary Welsh Centre-Forwards with John Charles being helped in his time of need by a present day one, who stole the show on the night. Referee Keith Hackett (Sheffield).
